Inside the ciliate unicellular algae (the globular green cells) live in symbiosis with\u00a0<em>S. amethystinus<\/em>. <em>Stentor <\/em>is the <a title=\"Einzeller des Jahres Stentor amethystinus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.protozoologie.de\/EinzellerdesJahres2014.html\">Unicellular Eukaryote of the Year 2014<\/a>. This population was sampled by Samuel Vorhauser from Puntleidersee in South-Tyrol (Italy) and photographed by <a title=\"Barbara Kammerlander\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ciliates.at\/team\/barbara-kammerlander\/\">Barbara Kammerlander<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-358 colorbox-354\" alt=\"Stentor_amethystinus_Granula\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciliates.at\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/11\/Stentor_amethystinus_Granula.jpg\" width=\"538\" height=\"402\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Due to so-called cortical granules <em>S. amethystinus<\/em> appears violet to purple.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-359 colorbox-354\" alt=\"Stentor_amethystinus_Symbionts\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciliates.at\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/11\/Stentor_amethystinus_Symbionts.jpg\" width=\"536\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Algal symbionts live in symbiosis with <em>S. amethystinus<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stentor amethystinus is a trumpet-shaped ciliate with a violet to purple appearance.\u00a0 The ciliate is almost 1 mm long and common in lake and pond plankton.
